What's a good karaoke gift for a 5-year-old?
Look at simple, battery-run models. VTech lists the Kidi Star for ages 5 and up, and the Kids Star Stage and Lil' Rex keep the controls simple.

Only if the person already has a machine with a mic jack. The SMM-205 plugs into a 6.3 mm jack and includes a 3.5 mm adapter, per Singing Machine.
Will it work straight out of the box?
Check the batteries. Several gifts here need AA or AAA batteries that aren't included.
